On July 22, Técnico hosted one of the most important sessions of the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). This event is held for the first time in Portugal and brought together about 150 committee leaders.
The president of Técnico, professor Arlindo Oliveira, highlighted the importance of the Department of Physics in the organisation of this Olympiad and stressed that this event and Técnico share the same goal: to promote and disseminate science. The president invited all leaders to visit Técnico facilities and to learn more about the work that is done here.
The IPhO 2018 brought hundreds of secondary school students to Lisbon aiming to promote Physics and international contacts. This international conference includes 5-hour individual theoretical and experimental competitions in Physics. Several leisure moments will also be provided to the 400 participants.
The competitions are held at ULisboa rectory building and the International Board meetings take place at Técnico, which plays an essential role at human resources level. Around 1/3 of almost 100 examiners are professors and researchers from the Department of Physics and the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering at Técnico. Professor Pedro Abreu, member of the organizing committee, highlighted “the support provided by IST Executive Board and the Department of Physics” and “the efficient support of Técnico staff to important issues”.
