Técnico professor develops a simple method to assess cancer risk

Professor João Sanches, from the Department of Bioengineering and researcher at Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), developed a new method, simple and effective, to study the functional impact of proteins in intercellular connections and thus detect increased risk for cancer.

Professor João Sanches, from the Department of Bioengineering and researcher at Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), in collaboration with Raquel Seruca’s group at i3S/IPATIMUP, University of Porto, developed a new method, simple and effective, to study the functional impact of proteins in intercellular connections and thus detect increased risk for cancer.

The authors of this study found that this method is able to distinguish E-cadherin mutation, which causes disruptions of cell adhesion that are associated to an invasive and clinically aggressive cancer risk.

This study was published in Scientific Reports and was funded by the American Association of Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer, within the international award that the team ISR/IST and Ipatimup/i3S received in 2015.
