Request a Special Status

There are specific situations that may confer a special status to a student, allowing access to certain conditions, such as the Special Season of Exams, so that the student can better align their academic path with their situation.

How to request

Each student who is eligible to benefit from one of the following special statuses for higher education students should request it, accompanied by the documents proving their situation, from the academic services of their campus.

Special Statuses for Students

  1. Social Support for Parents Studying

    Who can benefit:

    Parents who are studying, including pregnant students.

    Required documents:

    • Birth certificate (of the baby)
    • Medical report (in the case of pregnant women)

    Request Deadlines:

    It can be requested at any time during the school year.

  2. Firefighters

    Who can benefit:

    Professional career firefighters and volunteer firefighters.

    Required documents:

    • Declaration of professional practice

    This status must be requested within 30 days after the beginning of the academic year.

  3. Religious Confessions

    Who can benefit:

    Students who profess religious confessions that sanctify one day of the week.

    Required documents:

    • A declaration of the religious institution to which the student belongs, accompanied by an open request.

  4. Student Union/Association Leaders

    Who can benefit:

    Students who are leaders of student organizations at Técnico, as well as youth associative leaders under the terms stipulated in Law no. 23/2006 are considered to be student associative leaders.

    Rights:

    Students with the status of Student Association Director/Youth Association Director have the right to:

    • request up to five final assessments in each academic year, in addition to the final assessments of the normal and appeal exam seasons, with a maximum limit of two per course, on dates to be agreed with the heads of the courses (non-attendance of a required final assessment will lead to forfeiture of the right exercised, except in the case of justified absence);
    • postpone the presentation of written assignments and reports, in agreement with the person in charge of the course;
    • perform, on a date to be agreed upon with the head of the curricular unit, the assessments that he/she could not attend due to unavoidable associative activities.
    • absence from classes will be granted, upon presentation to the head of the curricular unit of a document proving the attendance of the following activities:
      • attendance at meetings of the student’s governing bodies, if these coincide with classes;
      • attendance in acts of associative interest.

    The students in this status shall enjoy the respective rights while exercising the positions for which they were elected until within one year after expiration of the term of office. The associative leader who ceases or suspends the exercise of his activity shall lose the rights arising from the special regime.

    Required documents:

    For leaders of student organizations of Técnico, the regime will be attributed when the taking office minutes are delivered to the academic services.

    Other leaders of youth associations based in the national territory and registered in the National Network of Youth Associations (RNAJ), the request should be sent by e-mail to the academic services of their campus.

    For student organizations of Técnico, the person in charge must send the taking office minutes by email to the academic services corresponding to the student’s campus, within 30 days after taking office and within 30 days after the beginning of each academic year.

    A declaration issued by IPDJ confirming the association’s registration in the RNAJ, under the terms of article 23 of Law no. 23/2006, should be attached to the requests made.

    The recognition of the right to a special regime of attendance depends on the annual application.

  5. Students-Athletes

    Who can benefit:

    Students enrolled and registered in higher education who cumulatively:

    • Participate in the championships and competitions provided for in the following article;
    • Comply with the sporting merit requirements applicable to them pursuant to article 4 of Decree-Law no. 55/2019;
    • Obtain the minimum academic record provided for in article 5 of Decree-Law no. 55/2019.

    Required documents:

    • Students Union (AEIST) declaration.

    It must be requested at the beginning of the school year.

  6. Special Educational Needs

    Who can benefit:

    Students at Técnico who have specific needs arising from temporary health conditions or not, according to the Regulations for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs.

    Required documents:

    The student who intends to apply for the Status of Student with Special Educational Needs (ENEE) must follow the following procedures:

    • Submit the request through the Connect platform, requiring the submission of documentary evidence (clinical report, medical certificate, and/or other duly authenticated document, i.e., with the identification of the competent professional and their signature). The instructions for requesting the Status can be found in the Instructions for requesting the ENEE Status
    • After submitting the request on Connect, and if the situation is eligible, students will be contacted by the Academic Development Office (NDA) team to schedule a meeting, with the objective of defining the support measures that will be associated with the Status.

    The request can be made at any time and, if the Status is authorized, its validity may be permanent or temporary.

    This process is managed with complete confidentiality: clinical documentation and all information provided by the student are not accessible to third parties nor disclosed to the faculty of the Curricular Units. This status is not recorded in the student’s final course documentation (diploma or certificate). The status serves only to formalize the support they need and are entitled to.

  7. High Performance Athletes

    Who can benefit:

    Students who practice high performance sports according to Decree-Law no. 272/2009.

    Required documents:

    • IPDJ declaration or sports federation declaration

    It must be requested at the beginning of the school year.

  8. Working Students

    Who can benefit:

    A working student is considered to be a worker attending any level of school education, as well as a post-graduate, master’s or doctoral course in an educational institution, or a vocational training course or a temporary youth occupation programme with a duration of six months or more.

    Request Deadlines:

    The student who intends to apply for this status should do so within 30 working days after the semester registration or enrolment/enrolment in a course at Técnico, by submitting the elements described below (send originals by email).

    The working-student status is awarded every semester, except for students with indefinite contracts, for whom the status is annual. Each student must notify academic services the following semester to have the status renewed.

    To be employed by others

    After the enrolment in curricular units, students should hand in proof of their status of working student, with the exception of students whose employment contract is open-ended. These students will request the status of working student at the beginning of the academic year, up to 30 working days after the end of the registration period, and this will be automatically renewed for the 2nd semester.

    In case of termination of the work contract during the academic year in question, it is the student’s responsibility to inform the academic secretariats of the respective change. The academic services may, in these cases and at any time, request proof that the conditions for attribution of the status are maintained.

    In case the student is only enrolled in curricular units of the 2nd semester he/she has 30 days after enrolment to prove his/her status of student worker.

    1. Declaration of the Employer, authenticated, in which the following elements must be included:
      • Full identification of the employer (including Social Security number).
      • Name of the worker;
      • Type of work contract;
      • Weekly working hours;
      • The worker’s Social Security number;
      • Employee’s VAT number.
    2. Proof that the contributory situation has been regularized with the Social Security services.

    Working in a freelance regime

    1. Original proof of the beginning or resumption of activity;
    2. Copy of the last receipt issued;
    3. Proof of the tax contribution status regularized with the Social Security services.

    Note: Social Security declarations can be requested by logging into the respective Social Security webpage.

    Benefits and duties:

    • Student-workers do not lapse, however, they lose the right to access the Special Exam Period if they do not pass in 2 consecutive or 3 interpolated years.
    • Success in school is understood to be when the student transits the year or passes at least half of the subjects in which the working-student is enrolled (rounded down, if necessary).
    • Working students have access to the Special Season of Exams and can register for a set of curricular units that do not exceed 15 ECTS credits.
