Great Hall, Alameda campus

Can music be measured?

Date: 13 May
Hour: 10 a.m.
Venue: Great Hall, Técnico – Alameda campus

Can music be measured?

In this session, we will explore symmetries, uncover amusing paradoxes, and face the concept of infinity! Each topic will be illustrated with both mathematical and musical examples. At the end, we will have time for a guided tour of a magical place.

On 13 May 2026, at 10 a.m., live at Técnico – Alameda campus, we will be joined by Diogo Oliveira e Silva, professor at the Department of Mathematics, Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at the Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD), who will answer these questions.

Biography
Diogo Oliveira e Silva was born and raised in Porto, where he discovered his passion for mathematics through the book ‘Aha! Insight’ (Martin Gardner) and the mathematics Olympiads. He studied in Porto, Moscow, Berlin and Berkeley, and did research work in California, Germany and England before returning to Portugal in 2022. Since then, he has been a professor at the Department of Mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, and a researcher at the Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, and Dynamical Systems. His research focuses on harmonic analysis, which is the rigorous study of wave phenomena – for example, sound waves. He enjoys playing the piano.

Special guest:

Daniel Schvetz, born in Buenos Aires, studied piano and composition at the López Bouchardo National Conservatory with renowned professors. He took harmony classes with Fermina Cassanova across four levels and studied piano with Roberto Brando and Moisés Makaroff. Additionally, he learned counterpoint, fugue, and composition from Guillermo Graetzer. Daniel Schvetz has traveled throughout Latin America for research purposes. He has lived in Portugal since 1990, where he teaches composition at the National Conservatory’s Artistic School of Music. He has composed three operas, several musicals, concert music, choral works, and pieces for voice and piano, as well as music for theatre and cinema.

About the Programme

“Explain it like I’m 5 – Science talks at Técnico for curious children and adults”, is designed for young people, opening a door to get to know Técnico research and to ask our scientists a question.
