Did you know that there are cities where every drop counts… and others where every drop is wasted?
What path does water take in a city? How does it get from its source to the tap and then back to nature? In this session, we talk about the water cycle, from how we treat, distribute, drain and reuse it, without forgetting the privilege of access to drinking water, global water challenges and the importance of sustainability.
On 6 February 2025, at 10 a.m., live at Técnico – Alameda campus, we will be joined by Filipa Ferreira, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, who will answer these questions.
Biography
Filipa Ferreira is a professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. She graduated in Civil Engineering in 1996 from Técnico. She got her master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering in 2000 from Nova School of Science and Technology, and her PhD in Civil Engineering in 2006 from Técnico. Later, in 2024, she obtained her habilitation degree in Civil Engineering from Técnico. Currently, she conducts research at CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, on water distribution and wastewater drainage systems; water quality and pollution control; modelling; warning systems; urban resilience and sustainability; water and wastewater treatment; water reuse and loss reduction. She is the author or co-author of more than 40 scientific articles published in international journals and a member of the European Technical and Scientific Committee of EWA since 2017. She has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Sanitary Engineering Specialisation of Ordem dos Engenheiros since 2022.
About the Programme
“Explain it like I’m 5 – Science talks at Técnico for curious children and adults”, is designed for young people, opening a door to get to know Técnico research and to ask our scientists a question.
