The Universe – Is it infinitely large or infinitely small?

In this session, we will talk about things that are extremely big and extremely small. What questions do you have about them? Are they all connected?

On 29 April 2026, at 10 a.m., live at Técnico – Alameda campus, we will be joined by Pedro Abreu, researcher at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP), who will answer these questions.

Biography
Pedro Abreu is a professor at the Department of Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, and a researcher at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP). He worked on the DELPHI experiment at LEP/CERN from 1987 to 2014, at the Pierre Auger Observatory (in Argentina) since 2006 and, more recently, at the SWGO (the wide-field gamma-ray observatory at the Southern hemisphere). He has been Outreach Coordinator at LIP since 2003 and national coordinator for the International Masterclasses in Particle Physics since their launch in 2005, coordinated by the IPPOG – International Particle Physics Outreach Group, for which he has been co-responsible since 1 January 2020. He was the winner of the Ciência Viva Educação 2022 Award for his work in schools, in particular for the Masterclasses programme in Portugal and the Portuguese-language Teacher Training Schools at CERN.

About the Programme

“Explain it like I’m 5 – Science talks at Técnico for curious children and adults”, is designed for young people, opening a door to get to know Técnico research and to ask our scientists a question.
