«AIDGLOBAL, in partnership with Loures City Council, Instituto Superior Técnico, bim+, dstsolar and innovationpoint, is organising the Final Conference “Laboratório Vivo – Descarbonização e Inovação no Parque Adão Barata (PAB)”, on April 22nd, from 2.30 p.m. to 5.15 p.m., in the Assembly Room of the Marqueses da Praia and Monforte Palace, in Parque Adão Barata (PAB), in Loures.

Under the premise of contributing to a more sustainable city, thinking about it not only from an economic and social point of view but also from an environmental point of view, the conference will feature speakers from the project’s partner organizations who will present the results achieved, based on the balance of joint work carried out over three years, between 2021 and 2024, and the sustainable technological innovations implemented to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the PAB’s air quality.

From the installation of a smart irrigation system, energy efficiency and better use of the creation’s resources, a waste management plan or a sensing system that allows air quality to be managed, the promotion of sustainable mobility and a commitment to the circular economy to the mobilization of the community around the Park are some of the activities carried out by the project and which will be addressed at the meeting.

The conference will highlight Loures’ role as a smart city. Smart cities are territories that use technology to create solutions for decarbonization. The strategies implemented in Adão Barata Park, which will be presented at the event, allow for better management of already scarce natural resources, promote the use of alternative means of transport, such as cycling, and allow drivers to know where to park more quickly, among other innovations that lead to a reduction in CO2. Emphasis will also be placed on the implementation of a smart energy community that allows for the storage and sharing of solar energy, and the transformation of buildings into zero-carbon equipment.

In the current context of accelerated urbanization and climate change, urban sustainability has become a global priority, with a view to creating alternatives that promote urban green spaces, human well-being and the health of the planet. With this in mind, the project has helped Adão Barata Park to become a good example of a more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable urban environment, a Living Laboratory for Decarbonization, which adopts clean technologies and contributes to quality of life and a greater connection with nature in urban areas. This is what Goal 11 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls for.»
