The 2nd edition of International Microorganism Day (IMD 2018) will take place on September 17 all around Europe, focused in two main topics: Microbes and the fascination for the invisible” and “Microorganisms, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Development”.
The IMD 2018 aims to raise awareness among young people and the society in general on the role of microorganisms in our lives as well as their potential as versatile and efficient cell factories.
The Portuguese activities will be organised by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM), in collaboration with Ciência Viva Agency, Ordem dos Biólogos, the Portuguese Society of Ecology, with the high patronage of the UNESCO National Commission. The Portuguese Microbiological Resource Center Network and the Spanish Microbiology Society will also participate in the celebrations.
The activities to be held in Portugal will be promoted by several Microbiology Societies that are part of FEMS (Federation of the European Microbiology Societies), which supports the event together with the European Culture Collection Organization (ECCO) and the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME).
The Department of Bioengineering (DBE), the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), the Biological Engineering Student Group (NEB), the Biomedical Engineering Student Group and Clube de Cervejeiros at Técnico will support the activities that will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), as well as several other Portuguese academic and research units.
The opening session will start at 9.30 a.m. at Salão Nobre (Main building, 1st floor).
