Initiative “If I were…a structural engineer”

Civil Engineering Museum, Alameda campus / Church of São Roque

22 February, at 10 a.m. / 3 p.m., in Civil Engineering Museum, Alameda campus / Church of São Roque

Date: 22 February
Hour: 10 a.m. / 3 p.m.
Venue: Civil Engineering Museum, Alameda campus (10 a.m.) / Church of São Roque (3 p.m.)

“If I were…a structural engineer” is an initiative organised by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in partnership with Instituto Superior Técnico.

Can buildings be built to withstand earthquakes? Yes, it is essential to reinforce old buildings before an earthquake occurs in order to prevent serious damage and to intelligently design new structures.

The visits will consist of two moments and take place in two locations, aiming to explore the different perspectives we can have of the same craft, depending on the context in which we find ourselves.

The first part of the visit starts at the Civil Engineering Museum of Instituto Superior Técnico, to understand how structures behave, the effects of an earthquake and what can be done to reduce damage.

In the second part of the activity, we’ll visit the Church of São Roque, built in the 16th century, which withstood the 1755 earthquake thanks to its engineering design.

Participation is free of charge. Booking required. Maximum of 20 participants.

The activity “A Terra Treme! É um sismo!” (“The Earth Shakes! It’s an earthquake!”) – developed by Mónica Amaral Ferreira, a researcher at CERIS (Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability) – has been running since 2018 for schools at the São Roque Museum. Every year, a Saturday in February is dedicated to welcoming families and promoting a special activity at Instituto Superior Técnico and the Church of São Roque.
