«The International Microorganism Day will once again be celebrated at the Alameda Campus of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, on 17 September.

The Biological Sciences Group of the Department of Bioengineering at Técnico will once again organise a dynamic and educational event, highlighting the essential role of microbiology in our daily lives and on the planet. Microbiology plays a crucial role in addressing health issues, adapting to climate change, and promoting sustainable agriculture, making it a key area of scientific advancement.

The programme will also include a live broadcast from the Lisbon Academy of Sciences of the session ‘Microbiology without borders: the Portuguese scientific diaspora’, in which four Técnico alumni, with distinguished international careers in the field of microbiology, will address current topics in the field.

This event aims to raise awareness within the community about the impact of microbiology on society and to spark curiosity about the microbial world through education, science communication and hands-on exploration.

Target audience: School groups (from primary to secondary school), university students, families and the general public with an interest in science.

Participation is free of charge. School and group visits can be booked in advance.

Técnico has been actively involved in the international celebration of this day since 2017, organising various activities each year. These events include open laboratory sessions, lectures for both secondary and higher education students, training courses for secondary school teachers, and exhibitions where attendees can perform their own experiments and taste products derived from microbiology. Each year, these activities benefit from the insights of national and international scientists, professors, and graduate students who are engaged in microbiology research.»
