Lectures, exhibitions, experiments and games related to the vital role that research in Microbiology plays in Bioindustries, Biotechnology, Health and the Environment.

«The International Microorganism Day is celebrated on September 17. This date marks the day on which, in 1683, the Dutchman Anton van Leeuwenhoek, a merchant without fortune or academic degrees, sent a letter to the Royal Society of London, in which he reported the first observation of unicellular organisms.

The objective of this day is to raise awareness among young people and society in general about the importance of microorganisms and their role in health, the environment, industry, the economy and everyone’s quality of life.

Técnico has played an active role in the international commemoration of this day, having organised several activities in its various editions since 2017. These include open laboratories, lectures for secondary and higher school students, courses for secondary school teachers and exhibitions where visitors can conduct their own experiments and taste products of microbiological origin. Each year the activities are attended by national and international scientists, professors and graduate students working in microbiology.

On 17 September, Técnico is celebrating International Microorganism Day 2024 with the ‘Microbiology Route’, an immersive activity with various exhibitions, experiments and games related to the importance of microorganisms. The celebration will also feature guest lectures on the roles of microbiology in human health and in adapting to climate change.

The Alameda campus has four entrances. Each one will have a campus map with the route to our activities and/or the Microbiology training course.»
