The Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil – ANEPC (National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection) annually promotes a nationwide public awareness exercise for the seismic risk, called “A TERRA TREME” (“The Earth shakes”).

The 9th edition of the event will take place on 5th November, at 11.05 a.m., the date on which the World Tsunami Risk Awareness Day is also celebrated. The date was established by the UN. The initiative is part of the activities included in the National Strategy for Preventive Civil Protection, and aims to train the population to know how to act before, during and after an earthquake.

The exercise itself comprises 3 simple actions that can make a difference to those who practice them in the event of an earthquake. The action takes place during one (1) minute, in which the participants, individually or collectively (families, schools, companies, public, private, or associative institutions), perform the 3 self-protection actions: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

Participation in the Exercise can be done in multiple ways:

• Promoting the response to a survey (of workers/employees) that aims to assess the degree of perception of the seismic risk (aterratreme.pt/inquérito);
• Holding an internal clarification/sensitization session (for workers/employees) on preventive measures and self-protection behaviors to be adopted in our homes and workplaces;
• The dissemination in the Institution’s communication channels (Institutional page and social media) of its involvement and participation in the initiative;
• The dissemination through internal email by all information workers/collaborators on preventive measures and self-protection behaviors to adopt in the event of an earthquake/tsunami;
• Individual and/or Institutional registration on the digital site aterratreme.pt;
• Revisiting preventive and emergency procedures to deal with an earthquake and/or tsunami event;
• Evacuation test exercise on 5-11-2021, the chosen date for the realization of the “A TERRA TREME”, aiming to dynamize other actions that may enrich the initiative’s agenda.
