“Rainbow Days (First Edition)” – QueerIST

Técnico - Alameda campus

QueerIST is organizing a week of free activities called “Rainbow Days (First Edition)”, dedicated to LGBTI+ issues, from April 23 to 26, at Instituto Superior Técnico, aiming at starting a dialogue on the integration of queer people in the workplace and encouraging the reflection on LGBTI+ experience in an engineering context.

The programme consists of:

0) Opening session with the Vice-Rector of the Universidade de Lisboa, Prof. António M. Feijó.
1) Talk “A Colourful Workplace”. Consisting in two panels, the first representing the corporate setting, with confirmed guests from IBM, McKinsey and BNP Paribas. The second panel consists of professors and researchers of the academic world, including from Técnico. The purpose is that guests share their experiences as queer people in the corporate and academic world, since one of the main concerns of the queer community is how their identity could interfere with their professional life.
2) Barbecue “Straight or Queer, we all want beer”, a classic get-together of students at Técnico.
3) Drag Masterclass, where a drag queen will show us the makeup and transformation process.
4) Cinema session followed by debate.

We believe  that the importance of this event for the academic community is undeniable, being not only a symbolic step for teachers and students who may be part of sexual and relational minorites, but also giving substance to the respect and acceptance they should have at Técnico, but also fostering the dialogue and benefiting all the members of this Institute and the academic community in general.

Venue: Abreu Faro amphitheatre, Interdisciplinary building.
