The Técnico Holiday Programme is an initiative that aims to make academic life known to secondary school students, providing them with various science activities.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet students, professors and scientists from Instituto Superior Técnico, to be put to the test with various quests from the different areas of Engineering, and get their hands dirty to solve them.
The activities take place from 1st to 5th April, at Técnico – Alameda Campus, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except on Thursday, when they end at 9 p.m. with a dinner party).
Planned activities:
- Rockets Workshop – Aerospace Engineering Students’ Organisation (AeroTéc)
Introduce concepts of physics and aerospace engineering by assembling and launching small rockets; - Biopólio – o Monopólio da Engenharia (Engineering Monopoly) – IEEE – EMBS Student Branch (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society).
Game: Reach the end with the largest possible share of customers (weighted with the value of the customer) and win the health monopoly; - Garra Hidráulica (Hidraulic claw) – Mechanical Engineering Students’ Organisation (Fórum Mecânica)
Develop a claw made of cardboard, syringes and silicone air tubes; - Unicórnio por um Dia (Unicorn for a Day) – Junior Enterprises at Instituto Superior Técnico (JUNITEC)
Showing what the world of entrepreneurship is like, from the brainstorming of ideas, to the investment phases, all the way to the unicorn, pitches, idea development and teamwork; - BanaNEEC – O Piano de Bananas (A Piano made of Bananas) – Electrical and Computer Engineering Students’ Organisation (NEEC)
Arduino project where the final product consists of a piano with bananas as the musical keys. Assembly of the entire circuit and programming; - Circo da Física (Physics Circus) – Núcleo de Estudantes de Física Tecnológica (NFIST)
Experiments: mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and electromagnetism, optics and waves and relativity; - O Terramoto (The Earthquake) – Student Support Unit/Team Ciência:
The challenge is to rebuild a bridge and thus restore normality to an area affected by an earthquake.
Visits to Técnico laboratories:
- CATHPRO and X-Ray Diffraction Laboratory (Centro de Química Estrutural): CO2 capture by the Calcium Cycle & A journey inside the X-ray laboratory;
- GEOLAB (Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente): Unravelling Mineral and Energy Resources;
- Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Microssistemas e Nanotecnologias (INESC MN): Microfabrication & Microfluidics Workshop;
- Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR): Robotics challenge: domestic robots
