Lecture:

Some special materials have very small pores in their structure. These pores are the same size as the molecules (nanometre size) which greatly increases the adsorption phenomenon, i.e. the accumulation of liquid or gaseous molecules inside the pores. In recent years, researcher Moisés Pinto has been involved in developing these adsorbent materials and adsorption processes for some challenging applications, which include: the capture of carbon dioxide from industrial gaseous effluents using porous clays, to reduce the carbon footprint of large industrial units; the application of hybrid porous materials for the capture of harmful vapours and the protection of cultural heritage within museums; and the storage of nitric oxide within adsorbent materials for its release at specific sites on the human body for the treatment of various types of diseases, such as poor healing, cardiovascular diseases and cancer therapies.

Moisés Luzia Pinto (MLP), has a PhD in Physical Chemistry and he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa. MLP has been carrying out research in the area of adsorbent materials and related applications for the last 15 years, with various types of materials. His work has focused mainly on the application of materials for gas separation/purification, gas storage and therapeutic gas supply. MLP was/is the Scientific Manager of 3 Industrial Research contracts and Scientific Director of 6 Public Research Projects in collaboration with companies. He teaches the following course units: Environmental Biological and Chemical Engineering Processes (Master’s Programme in Environmental Engineering); Chemical Engineering Project, Process Synthesis and Integration and Safety and Industrial Utilities (Master’s Programme in Chemical Engineering); Pharmaceutical Facilities Design (Master’s Programme in Pharmaceutical Engineering) and Adsorbent Materials and Adsorption Processes, Polymer Production and Industrial Hygiene and Safety (optional course units).

Master’s Programmes offered by the Department of Chemical Engineering:

Master’s Programme in Chemical Engineering
Master’s Programme in Molecular Science and Engineering
Master’s Programme in Environmental Engineering
Master’s Programme in Materials Engineering
Master’s Programme in Pharmaceutical Engineering (in partnership with the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa)
