Lecture:

Mineral and energy resources are part of our daily lives and are central to the green energy and digital transition. These resources are hidden under our feet a few metres or kilometres underground, and their characterisation and modelling is a challenge that requires advanced computational methods that integrate artificial intelligence and data science. Through examples of research projects and student projects developed in the Department of Engineering in Mineral and Energy Resources, we will explore how sustainability also involves getting to know the planet we walk on better.

Leonardo Azevedo is an associate professor in the Department of Mining Engineering and Energy Resources at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, and he is currently the Coordinator of the Center for Natural Resources and Environment (CERENA). His main research interests are related to the development of new methods for computational Earth modelling at different scales combining geophysics and experimental data science methods. He is the author of more than 60 publications in international journals and, in 2022, he was honoured with two international prizes awarded to researchers under the age of 35 for their contributions in areas related to geophysics and geosciences.

He teaches subjects related to processing, interpretation and geophysical data modelling, and spatial data science.

Master’s Programmes offered by the Department of Engineering in Mineral and Energy Resources:

Master’s Programme in Mining and Geological Engineering
Master’s Programme in Energy Resources Engineering

About Técnico MasterTalks:

Técnico offers 33 master’s programmes ranging from Engineering to Architecture, Aerospace Engineering to Bioengineering, Engineering Physics to Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering to Chemistry, Natural Resources to Computer Science, Management to Nuclear Technologies, including Mathematics.
Every month, we invite you to come and meet the professors, and to learn more about the student projects and all the opportunities that are available to those who study at Técnico. The MasterTalks take place on a Thursday, at 5.15 p.m., in Técnico Congress Centre, Lisbon.
