Técnico podcast “110 Histórias, 110 Objetos” – The Cellular Automata Machine

The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) covers the 110 years of history of Instituto Superior Técnico.

The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) covers the 110 years of history of Instituto Superior Técnico, through its past, present and future objects.

A collection of objects related to different fields, such as science, music, arts and sports, is the starting point for conversations with people who will tell us more about the history of these objects.

A new episode is released every week. The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) is part of the Público newspaper

Today’s episode (#24) – 10th December 2021: “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) –  “The cellular automata machine”.

Built in 1985 by Técnico researchers with rudimentary electronic material, the Técnico’s cellular automata prototype was able to perform 15 million operations per second, for example by analysing the evolution of the water flow along the Tagus estuary. The cellular automata machine is still in full operation, despite its electronic circuits, memories and structure being only protected by acrylics. This machine, which is composed of calculators that work collaboratively and interact with each other very fast, was used by many Técnico students and gave rise to scientific collaborations with the Portuguese Department of National Defence.
