Bauhaus of the Seas Sails artistic residencies: Open call until May 14th

The multidisciplinary residencies will promote sustainability, inclusion and creativity with a local impact.

A call for applications is now open for three multidisciplinary artistic residencies under the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails initiative. The project brings together Instituto Superior Técnico, the municipalities of Lisbon and Oeiras and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Centro de Arte Moderna). Each residence is part of one of the three pilot projects that will be developed in Portugal under this European initiative.

The Art & Science residency A Call to the Sea, as part of the Ocean Literacy pilot project, invites artists and scientists to present collaborative proposals based on the zoological collections of the Vasco da Gama Aquarium in Oeiras.

The Art & Food residency Eating Between Tides, as part of the Regenerative Menu pilot project, encourages a co-design process between a visual artist, a chef and a municipal school to develop a regenerative menu that includes ingredients from the Tagus River. This menu will then be tested in schools and cultural institutions.

The Art & Design residency Radical Water – Concrete Matters, as part of the Blue Makerspace pilot project, encourages the creation of a prototype for the public space, built with materials from the Tagus River bioregion and/or the development of materials (from existing resources in the Tagus River) that can be used in future projects.

The application deadline is May 14, at 4 p.m.

About the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project

Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is a pioneering New European Bauhaus project guided by the values of sustainability, inclusion and creativity.
Involving 18 partners (from academia, culture and localised territories) in seven European cities (Genoa, Hamburg, Lisbon, Malmö, Oeiras, Rotterdam and Venice), this European initiative funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe Programme, seeks to launch an interdisciplinary and intergenerational movement to reimagining the relationship of coastal and riverside communities with the oceans, seas and other bodies of water, and to promote innovative projects that respond to environmental and social challenges.

In Portugal, the Ocean Literacy, Regenerative Menu and Blue Makerspace projects are being developed to stimulate a cross disciplinary understanding on how we can contribute to a more sustainable future. These projects are developed through a public programme of activities, artistic and scientific residencies, and exhibitions in cultural spaces.
