13 Técnico researchers win Universidade de Lisboa/ Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards

Several awards and honourable mentions were delivered to Técnico professors in different scientific areas.

As in previous years, several Técnico professors and researchers were recognised in the 2020 edition of Universidade de Lisboa/ Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards (ULisboa/CGD Scientific Awards) . The awards ceremony took place on 26th July. In total, 13 Técnico professors received the award.

Joaquim Jorge, professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) and researcher at INESC-ID, received the award in Computer Science and Informatics Engineering scientific area.

José Dinis Silvestre, professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources (DECivil), and researcher at CERIS – Civil Engineering, Research and Innovation for Sustainability, received the award in the Civil Engineering scientific area. Two honourable mentions were given, ex aequo, to Carlos Silva Cruz and Maria da Glória Gomes, both professors at DECivil and researchers at CERIS.

Tiago Domingos, professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) and researcher at MARETEC – Marine, Environment and Technology Center, received the award in Environmental and Energy Engineering scientific area, and Rui Gameiro de Castro, professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) and researcher at INESC-ID, received an honourable mention in the same scientific area.

Paulo André, professor at DEEC and researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), won the award in Electrical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Avionics) scientific area. Leonel Sousa, professor at DEEC and researcher at INESC-ID, won an honourable mention.

Pedro Coelho, professor at DEM and researcher at IDMEC, won the award in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Aircraft) scientific area.

Alexander Kirillov, professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ) and researcher at Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE), won the award in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering scientific area. Luísa Martins, professor at DEQ and researcher at CQE, won the only honourable mention awarded in this scientific area.

Técnico professors who also won honourable mentions: Bill Williams, member of the Centre for Management Studies at IST (CEG-IST) and Técnico professor (retired) was awarded in the Educational Sciences scientific area; Vasco Guerra, professor at the Department of Physics (DF) and researcher at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN) won an honourable mention in Physics and Materials Engineering scientific area.

The 2019 awards ceremony did not take place due to the pandemic situation, so three of the five Técnico researchers awarded in the 2019 edition received the award from the Rector of ULisboa, professor António Cruz Serra, and the CEO of CGD, Paulo Macedo, last 26th July.

15 awards and 15 honourable mentions were delivered in the 2019 edition. In 2020, the number of ULisboa/CGD Scientific Awards and honourable mentions have increased: 18 awards and 23 honourable mentions were delivered.

The ULisboa/CGD Scientific Awards reward scientific research activity and encourage the practice of publishing in international journals of recognised quality. These awards consist of a diploma and a €6.500 cash prize.

“These awards are the result of joint efforts and, above all, of the environment of positive differentiation and of excellence”, said Paulo Macedo.

The CEO of CGD highlighted the importance of ULisboa in society and shared CGD’s willingness to continue supporting and investing in knowledge, particularly in universities. “We believe that the University, with its endless freedom of spirit, is an essential bulwark for knowledge dissemination”, he said.

Professor António Cruz Serra stressed the importance of scientific work and research for teaching and scientific progress, as well as for solving society’s problems. The Rector took the opportunity to thank the work carried out by the professors, researchers and staff, whose effort and commitment during the pandemic helped to keep the University running last year.
