António Guterres will be awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Universidade de Lisboa

The Secretary-General of the United Nations will be honoured by Universidade de Lisboa, upon a proposal by Instituto Superior Técnico.

Engineer António Guterres will be awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. The ceremony will take place on February 19, at 10.30 a.m., in Aula Magna (ULisboa Rectorate building).

This is not the first Honoris Causa title that the UN Secretary-General receives, but it is perhaps the one that makes more sense due to his link to Técnico. António Guterres got his degree in Electrical Engineering at Técnico, where he was also an invited full professor in 2003, after leaving the Portuguese government as Prime-Minister and before holding the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

It is common knowledge that engineer António Guterres has a unique political journey and career that has more than 20 years. The Técnico alumnus held various political positions, both nationally and internationally. Renowned for his dedication to social causes and after being a remarkable United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees when emerged the worst refugee crisis since World War II, he was appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations by the UN Security Council in 2017.
