The 4th edition of the Deloitte Merit Award in Data Science honoured Beatriz Militão, a master’s student in Computer Science and Engineering, for her performance in the Data Science curricular unit. The student obtained a final mark of 18 and received a prize worth 1800 euros. The ceremony took place on 15 May at the Chemical Engineering Building, Alameda campus. It included a donation of 1,200 euros to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) to support the improvement of teaching and learning conditions at the UC.
The session was attended by the President of Técnico, Rogério Colaço, who expressed his gratitude to Deloitte for continuing a long-standing partnership. He emphasised that ‘partnerships are fundamental for Técnico and its students, because they motivate students and recognise talent’. He also recalled that Técnico’s mission, since it was founded 114 years ago, has been ‘to help the country develop’ and that, to fulfil this objective, ‘we have to open our doors to society’. He congratulated Beatriz Militão and highlighted her successful career as an athlete in Técnico’s women’s futsal team.
Beatriz Militão thanked Cláudia Antunes, a professor at Técnico, and her colleagues, recognising that this kind of distinction ‘gives us the motivation to keep going’. The professor thanked Deloitte for supporting this award ‘for the last four years (not consecutively)’ and emphasised the pleasure of having this support in a curricular unit that is so relevant to the students’ training.
The jury was made up of Cláudia Antunes, the senior lecturer of the curricular unit, Mário Gaspar da Silva, a professor at Técnico, and Paulo Maurício, from Deloitte.
Paulo Maurício, a Técnico alumnus and director at Deloitte, emphasised the importance of collaborating with the school, saying that this partnership ‘allows the company to get closer to the students’. The Técnico alumnus set the tone for the Meetup with Deloitte, an event that followed the award ceremony and promoted an informal conversation between students and company employees, many of whom are Técnico alumni.
