The Department of Chemical Engineering at Técnico (DEQ) organised another edition of DEQ Open Labs on 4th and 5th February. The students were divided into groups to observe the lab experiments and, at the end, the expectations were exceeded: “I thought it was going to be a boring day, but after all I had a great time”, says Catarina, a young student who confesses that she doesn’t want to be an engineer, but she knows that Técnico “is well known as a leading engineering school” and “maybe I change my mind”.
It is estimated that 1500 students participate in DEQ Open Labs, which last five days. The participants’ age is different, so appropriate activities are sorted by age ranges, but the ultimate goal is always the same: to motivate and attract young students to science, in particular to chemistry.
The DEQ Open Labs will run until Friday, February 8th, involving all members of the Department of Chemical Engineering and about 100 students who help and guide the participants.
