Emily S. Weinstein shared security concerns in science and technology at American Corner session

The researcher at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), Georgetown University, addressed the goals of the People's Republic of China in the fields of Science and Technology and Technology Transfer.

Researcher Emily S. Weinstein was the most recent guest speaker of the American Corner lectures at Instituto Superior Técnico. This Tuesday, March 7, the Research Fellow at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), Georgetown University, gave the lecture “Navigating economic security issues with PRC (People’s Republic of China)”.

Professor Luís Viseu Melo, Técnico professor at the Department of Physics, presented the researcher, who made a brief presentation of CSET before starting the lecture.

Emily S. Weinstein referred to the goals of the People’s Republic of China in the fields of Science and Technology, addressing in particular the area of Technology Transfer. The researcher highlighted the legal practices such as company takeovers, Chinese international students in Western universities.

According to Emily S. Weinstein, China’s main interests in the technological area are medical equipment, biopharmaceuticals, new materials and information technologies. She also pointed out that 50% of projects involving China are related to biotechnology or artificial intelligence.

The researcher talked about how university and corporate partnerships are vital to China and noted, in this regard, that there are around 150 Chinese diplomats across 52 countries, in the fields of Science and Technology.

At the end of the session, Emily S. Weinstein gave some advice regarding joint participation with Chinese entities, highlighting the difference between the Chinese and English versions of the websites.
