This Thursday, May 9th, Técnico hosted the Exame Informática award ceremony “Os Melhores do Portugal Tecnológico”, during the 31st edition of Jobshop. The audience was composed of company representatives, researchers and students.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome you here in our campus, in this event organised by our students, which shows a great dynamism and commitment”, said the president of Técnico, professor Arlindo Oliveira. “Hosting this event is proof that Técnico plays an important role in the technology area, as well as in the industrial and commercial activity of our country”, he added.
According to Pedro Oliveira, Editor-in-Chief at Exame Informática, “It gives us great pleasure to hold events at Técnico: a school of reference“. “These awards aim to put the spotlights on innovative projects”, he added.
In the 14th edition, Exame Infomática delivered 9 awards and 2 honourable mentions, in each of the 9 categories, which rewarded research projects, innovative ideas developed in academic ecosystems, Think out of the box concepts to improve environment and help society.
Some of the ideas awarded: A technology able to identify the blood group in less than five minutes, a software that predicts the performance of a bacteria treating wastewater and climatic chambers that allow to produce vegetables without sunlight or soil.
An honourable mention in the software category was awarded to the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR). The award-winning project – Feedbot – is a robotic arm for autonomous assisted feeding.
Professor José Tribolet, president of the jury, delivered the Personality Award to Carlos Amaral, one of the founders of Priberam and also a Técnico alumnus. “The jury recognises Carlos Amaral’s pioneering spirit, know-how and perseverance in such a specialized and important area”, said the president of the jury.
“This is not an individual award, it concerns everyone at Priberam. This year the company celebrates its 30th anniversary. What a happy coincidence! Receiving this award at Técnico – the school of many of us at Priberam”, said Carlos Amaral.
For the first time, the jury decided to assign a Personality Award posthumously to João Vasconcelos. “The man who built bridges between politicians, entrepreneurs and companies died in April”, said professor José Tribolet, who also highlighted João Vasconcelos’ “important legacy”.
According to Mafalda Anjos, publisher at Trust in News and Editor-in chief at VISÃO, “this is a moment of great admiration and enthusiasm. It’s extraordinary to see so many projects. I believe that some of these projects are comparable with the best in the world”. “I hope that next year more people come up with great ideas, involving more people who like to think big and aim high, like João Vasconcelos”.
