Isabel Sá Correia elected Secretary General of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences

The Técnico professors Luís Oliveira e Silva, Hélder Rodrigues, Carlos de Sousa Oliveira and Isabel Ribeiro will also take up positions at the institution.

Isabel Sá-Correia, emeritus professor of Instituto Superior Técnico, was elected Secretary General and Secretary of the Class of Sciences of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences for the 2025-2026 biennium. Inherently, the founder of Técnico’s Biological Sciences scientific area will also be a member of the Scientific Council.

The position to be filled by Isabel Sá-Correia was initially held by José Francisco Correia da Serra, co-founder and one of the main mentors of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. The former president of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology will now lead the General Secretariat of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, among other duties within the institution.

After graduating in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1975, she obtained her doctorate from the same School in 1984 with a yeast physiology thesis, leading to Técnico’s first patent. As a Fulbright Visiting Assistant Professor, she completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1985/86. She received her Habilitation Degree from Técnico in 1992. In 2023 she gave her last lecture on biological sciences at Técnico, and in 2024 she was honoured as Emeritus Professor of Universidade de Lisboa.

In the 2025-206 biennium, several Técnico professors will also take up positions at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences: Luís Oliveira e Silva (Treasurer), Hélder Rodrigues (Historical Archive), Carlos de Sousa Oliveira (Heritage Commission) and Isabel Ribeiro (Publications Commission).
