The Martim Lancastre Scholarship award and renewal ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic year took place on the afternoon of 11 November at the Civil Engineering Museum, at Técnico – Alameda campus. José Contreras Lopes, Carolina Cardoso, Lara Pereira and Bruno Borges, Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students got their scholarships renewed. Afonso Rocha, who is attending the 1st year of the Undergraduate Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management was the new student awarded.
The fourth edition of the Martim Lancastre Scholarship coincides with the 4th year of José Contreras Lopes, the first scholarship holder, who took the opportunity to praise ‘the fact that there are more and more people on both sides, both on the side of the scholarship holders and on the side of the patrons’. This tribute to Martim Lancastre – who dreamt of studying Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering and Management at Técnico – allowed Bruno Borges to join FSTLisboa and ‘work on the [development of] FT14’ and Lara Pereira ‘to focus on what I really want to do, which was very refreshing’. Carolina Cardoso guaranteed that, although she ‘still doesn’t know what I want to study for my master’s degree’, she wants to ‘continue studying’. Newly arrived at Técnico, Afonso Rocha says it’s ‘been a good experience’ and that ‘teamwork always pays off’.
The signing ceremony was attended by the students, the patrons, Francisco Melo, the Vice-president of Técnico for Academic Affairs, Ana Póvoa, Head of the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG) and Luís Reis, coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in Mechanical Engineering.
‘Thank you for these scholarships that allow Técnico students to continue their studies without any worries and allow them to go further and maybe one day make a contribution’, said Francisco Melo. Ana Póvoa appealed to the students: ‘be good engineers and set a good example’. ‘Go abroad but come back and make this country grow’, she added. Luís Reis, who has attended the ceremony in previous years, said ‘making memory alive is always important. Técnico can only be grateful for this invaluable support’. ‘It’s something you’re building,’ he concluded, addressing the patrons.
The Martim Lancastre Scholarship programme started in 2021/2022 and aims to support Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management students of recognised academic merit who demonstrate financial needs, through annual scholarships worth 3,700 euros.
This scholarship programme is part of a series of scholarships offered at Instituto Superior Técnico.
