Mathematics Seminar Series: Chaos and creativity

The Mathematics Student Group organised lectures, a networking session, a workshop and a creative exhibition using practical applications of mathematics in everyday life.

The exhibition organised by the Mathematics student group shows that it is possible to find creativity out of chaos. The exhibition is part of the Mathematics Seminar Series and shows a messy bedroom, where chaos competes with mathematical applications. “It took us some time to figure out the best way to represent chaos and, at a certain point, we realised that people usually associate chaos to their bedroom. So we decided to create a messy bedroom”, says Leila Suleman, member of the organisation.

“Chaos is a mathematical concept and has applications in several areas. Through this exhibition we want to show Técnico community something different from what we learn in engineering courses”, says Leila Suleman. The truth is that, at first glance the idea can generate confusion, but as we visit the exhibition we realise that chaos is, in fact, a rich and complex property of several systems.

“The lectures had a large audience. The networking session and the workshop went very well. I think that the number of participants have been increasing year after year”, said Leila Suleman. According to the organisation team, the exhibition has been a success and the feedback has been very positive.

“We try that the Mathematics Seminar Series are different from the others. We don’t want it to be some kind of a job fair, although we also have that in our seminar series. Our main goal is to show mathematics beyond the curricular plan”, added Leila Suleman.
