Professor Carlos Guedes Soares wins ASME’s Lifetime Achievement Award

The Técnico professor was distinguished by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the important award for his work developed in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Professor Carlos Guedes Soares won the ASME Lifetime Achievement Award 2018. “This award recognises my academic and professional work, so I feel deeply honoured and grateful to receive this award from an organisation of great relevance, such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers”, says the Técnico professor – Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM).

Professor Carlos Guedes Soares is member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers since 1976, when he was a MSc student at MIT. “I became more involved since 1989, when I started to coordinate the Symposia of the International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering”, says the professor, who was also executive member of ASME’s Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering Division, of which he later became president.

According to the Técnico professor “this award is as important as the award I received from Técnico in 2017 (Distinguished Professor) and from the Ibero-American Federation of Mechanical Engineering – FIAEM (Career Award). However, ASME is much more diversified and global than FIAEM, so this award means a great deal to me”, clarifies professor Carlos Guedes Soares.
