Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is once again recognised as one of the most productive institutions for scientific research, leading both nationally and in the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in the fields of ‘Mathematics and Computer Science’ as well as ‘Physical Sciences and Engineering’, in which Instituto Superior Técnico plays a significant role in this achievement. The results were published in the latest edition of the CWTS Leiden Ranking, produced by Leiden University in the Netherlands, which assesses the scientific performance of universities worldwide between 2020 and 2023.
In this edition, which assessed 1,594 universities from 77 countries, ULisboa continues to perform strongly, not only in terms of the number of publications, but also in terms of the proportion of publications that belong to the top 10% most frequently cited in the same scientific areas.
Unlike other university rankings, the Leiden Ranking does not aggregate indicators into an overall score. It is an analytical tool that allows for exploring various dimensions of scientific performance – such as the impact of publications, institutional and industrial collaborations, open access publishing and gender equality – adjusted to the size of each institution.
Produced by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University, this ranking only includes universities that have published a minimum number of scientific articles in indexed international journals over four years. Publications must meet editorial and scientific quality criteria and be written in English with one or more authors.
