Leiden Ranking: ULisboa is among the world’s top universities in scientific performance

ULisboa ranks 131st in the overall ranking, holds the 30th position in Europe and is the leading university in the Iberian Peninsula.

According to the CWTS Leiden Ranking, Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is once again among the top universities in the world in scientific performance. The 2021 list was released this Wednesday, June 2. ULisboa ranks 131st in the general ranking and holds the 30th position in Europe. As in the previous year, ULisboa is the leading university in the Iberian Peninsula.

If we look at the 5 scientific areas included in the ranking and pay particular attention to those lectured at Técnico, ULisboa ranks 103rd in the general ranking and holds the 18th position in Europe in Mathematics and computer science. In Physical sciences and engineering, ULisboa ranks 102th worldwide and 16th in Europe. In Life and earth sciences ULisboa achieves a prestigious position in Europe – 10th, and in the general ranking – 59th.

The Leiden ranking analyses the performance, quality and impact of world universities’ scientific publications, based on bibliometric indicators from the Web of Science, produced by Clarivate Analytics. This year’s edition includes 1225 universities from 69 different countries, in the period 2016–2019.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2021 offers a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators that provide statistics at the level of universities on scientific impact, collaboration, open access publishing and gender diversity. In collaboration and open access publishing, ULisboa ranks 122nd in the general ranking and holds the 38th position in Europe. In gender diversity ULisboa ranks 102th in the general ranking and holds the 40th position in Europe.

The top-3 in the general ranking, at national level, is led by ULisboa, followed by University of Porto and University of Coimbra.

Harvard university is the leading university worldwide. Tsinghua University ranks 1st in Mathematics and computer science, and Physical sciences and engineering.
