Secondary school students get enthusiastic about Bioengineering

The Bioengineering Open Laboratories explore several scientific areas and bring together researchers, students and professionals to share their knowledge.

Beatriz Carvalho, a Bioengineering student, asked a group of seven students from secondary school: “What is the use of antibiotics?” Then, she explained how do bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, in a simple but interesting way. This experiment, among many others, was part of the Bioengineering Open Laboratories, organised by the Department of Bioengineering (DBE) at Técnico. The participants in this year’s edition had the opportunity to visit the Biomechanics and Robotics laboratories.

From 5th to 9th February, more than 750 students participated in practical activities and attended lectures on biosensors, bioinstrumentation, medical imaging, biomechanics, biomaterials and microorganisms. Professor Jorge Leitão highlights the positive effects of such events “it is quite common that, a few months later, we see some of these students attending as course at Técnico”.
