Técnico alumna receives Women in AI award for work in the quantum field

Catarina Moreira’s work in the area of Quantum Artificial Intelligence was recognised by an international organisation.

The Técnico alumna Catarina Moreira (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was honoured at the Women in AI Awards in the “Quantum Artificial Intelligence” category for developing quantum Bayesian networks (knowledge representation models) that incorporate the effects of quantum interference in modelling human decision-making. The prize was awarded on 28 June, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (Australia).

The researcher’s work brings new perspectives to the way decisions can interact and challenges not only the conventional limits of probabilistic modelling, but also paves the way for understanding complex decision-making processes that were previously impossible to explain.

The Women in AI (WAI) awards honour women who have made significant advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence, from different geographical areas. Catarina Moreira, working at the University of Technology Sydney (Australia), stood out in the Asia-Pacific region.

WAI is a non-profit organisation, founded in 2016, aiming to promote the empowerment of women and minorities by encouraging them to become leaders in the field of artificial intelligence. It has grown into a powerful community involving 140 countries.
