Pedro Costa and Lourenço Matos, Técnico alumni, are among the three young Portuguese students selected in 2025 by “la Caixa” Foundation for postgraduate scholarships abroad. The programme recognises academic excellence in mathematics, computer science and economics, offering an average support of €100,000 per student to cover tuition fees, accommodation, travel and additional training expenses.
Pedro Costa graduated in Applied Mathematics and Computation from Técnico in 2024. He will pursue a master’s programme in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Oxford with the support of a scholarship from the “la Caixa” Foundation. During his academic journey, he was a scholarship holder from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s ‘New Talents in Mathematics’ programme and excelled in various international mathematics and computer science competitions.
Lourenço Matos earned his degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Técnico and is currently enrolled in a Master’s Programme in Advanced Computer Science at the University of Cambridge. His academic experience includes participation in research projects focused on cybersecurity, computational biology, and open-source software development.
The “la Caixa” Foundation scholarships are intended for Portuguese and Spanish students who wish to pursue master’s and doctoral programmes, or pre-doctoral research lasting up to 24 months. The programme is available for universities in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region. Since 1982, the “la Caixa” Foundation has supported around 4,000 students, with a total investment exceeding €219 million.
