João Bordado, Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, President of the Scientific Council of C5Lab. – Sustainable Construction Materials Association, and researcher at the Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente (CERENA) was distinguished by the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM) with the “Career and Recognition Award”.
The award was delivered on April 6, at the closing ceremony of the “Materiais 2023” conference, which comprised the 12th International Materials Symposium and the 21st SPMCongress, at Centro Cultural Vila Flor, in Guimarães.
According to the Técnico professor, who is also a counsellor member of the Ordem dos Engenheiros, this award gives him “a sense of accomplishment”, since it is awarded by a Scientific Society that he helped to found and that he has already presided. “It won’t stop me from continuing to work at the same pace”, he stresses. “In 2001 and 2002, no longer teaching, I coordinated five projects, published more than 20 articles and five patents, and I managed to get three projects approved under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP)”, he says.
Professor João Bordado has more than 75 patents and has published more than 200 scientific articles. He has 23 years of industrial experience and more than 45 years of Engineering teaching (Organic Chemistry, Chemical Industries Project, at the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Materials Engineering subjects). His research focuses on catalysis and the production of reactive polymers from renewable resources. As a key moment in his career, he highlights “the moment I decided to work in Engineering, in the industry sector, building and starting up new factories, and developing pilot projects in the development of new materials and products”, without ever neglecting the teaching activity.
According to João Bordado, Materials Engineering plays a very important role, as it “develops the ‘physical support’ that is indispensable for the remaining Engineering subjects, such as Organic Chemistry, which is the basis for the development of most new materials”.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, professor Elvira Fortunato, was awarded the same distinction but could not attend the ceremony due to scheduling constraints.
