Técnico professor inducted into the IEEE Virtual Reality Academy

Joaquim Jorge receives international recognition for his contribution to the field of human-computer interaction.

Joaquim Jorge, a professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores (INESC-ID), was inducted into the prestigious IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Academy (Visualization and Graphics Technical Community of the IEEE Computer Society). This distinction acknowledges international leaders with significantly advanced Virtual Reality (VR) technologies.

Joaquim Jorge joins an exclusive group of internationally acclaimed researchers distinguished by their innovation and lasting impact on advanced human-computer interaction. “I’m honoured by this distinction, which recognises the efforts of our team and scientific community. For me, it represents the recognition of a career dedicated to technological innovation and the development of human-computer interaction, which I have taught for years at Técnico”, he says.

Throughout his career, Joaquim Jorge has been conducting research in the area of interfaces based on design, modelling and virtual reality, influencing the development of cutting-edge tools and techniques shaping the future of human-computer interaction, production of multimedia content and augmented reality.

Regarding the challenges of Virtual Reality research, Joaquim Jorge emphasises the need to improve the integration of immersive experiences with natural interfaces, such as speech, gestures and body posture, as well as the importance of the sustainable development of technologies. ‘The combination of Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence opens up new possibilities in areas such as medicine, enabling advances in diagnosis, treatment and professional training,’ he emphasises.

At the end of 2024, Joaquim Jorge had already featured on the list of Técnico professors elected IEEE Fellow.
