Rodrigo Miragaia Rodrigues, professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) at Técnico, received a Google Faculty Research Award and was the only Portuguese professor included in the 2017 award winner list. The Google Research Awards aim to recognise and support world-class, permanent faculty pursuing cutting-edge research in core areas relevant to Google’s mission, but also to identify and strengthen long-term collaborative relationships with faculty from these institutions.
The organisation received 1033 applications from 46 countries, involving more than 360 universities, of which resulted a list of 152 funded projects, most of them on machine learning, computer interaction, machine perception and Systems.
“I think this is a very competitive process, as reflected in the notoriety of the researchers and institutions that received the award this year”, stresses professor Rodrigo Miragaia Rodrigues. “In my opinion this is a recognition of the remarkable research carried out at Técnico and in Portugal”, adds the professor.
Rodrigo Miragaia Rodrigues research areas are distributed systems and cloud computing. His curriculum includes several awards and distinctions, including the first ERC Grant in the field of information technology in Portugal, received in 2012.
