Researcher Ricardo Birjukovs Canelas, currently carrying out his research as a postdoc at CERIS, won the award for the best 2015 PhD Thesis of APMTAC – Portuguese Association of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics.

The thesis titled ‘Numerical modeling of fully coupled solid-fluid flows’, was guided by Prof. Rui M.L. Ferreira (IST, DECivil) and Prof. Moncho Goméz Gesteira (University of Vigo), and presents high-performance computing strategies for problems in fluid mechanics and rigid body systems. The model allows a detailed study of complex flows of solid-fluid materials, allowing new research in this area.

The researcher completed his master’s degree in Civil Engineering in 2010 and his PhD in 2015, in collaboration with the University of Vigo.
