Técnico spin-off achieves ‘unicorn company’ status

Tekever, a company founded by Técnico alumni, has reached a valuation exceeding one billion dollars.

Tekever, a company specialising in aerospace technology and autonomous systems, has reached a valuation exceeding one billion dollars, officially becoming Portugal’s latest unicorn. Founded by Técnico alumni Pedro Sinogas, Ricardo Mendes, and Vítor Cristina (all graduates in Computer Science and Engineering), Tekever is part of the IST Spin-off community. This milestone reflects a journey that began over two decades ago, characterised by a strong commitment to technological innovation and international expansion.

The company offers solutions, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for maritime surveillance and data analysis platforms driven by artificial intelligence. Tekever has established a reputable presence in international markets, securing contracts with European agencies and naval authorities in various countries.

With operational centres in Portugal, the UK and other parts of Europe, Tekever relies on a combination of technological development, in-house production and operational services to tackle challenges such as combating drug trafficking in the Atlantic, controlling illegal fishing or detecting maritime pollution. The integration of sensors, communication networks and machine learning algorithms has been central to Tekever’s value proposition, which began in 2001.

In addition to its initiatives in maritime safety, the company has expanded its activities into emergency management and Earth observation. In 2023, Tekever launched its first space mission using its own technology, marking its entry into the microsatellite sector and reinforcing its commitment to space as a strategic growth area.

By joining the exclusive group of private companies with a valuation exceeding one billion dollars, Tekever (a member of the Técnico Partner Network) now stands alongside other notable Portuguese unicorns, including Talkdesk (also a member of the IST Spin-off community), Feedzai (a member of the Técnico Partner Network), OutSystems, Remote, Anchorage, and Sword Health.
