Lampsy Health, a technological spin-off from Instituto Superior Técnico and Instituto de Telecomunicações, has secured an investment of 230,000 euros for the clinical validation and European certification of its medical device for monitoring epileptic seizures. The funding round was led by the Ageas Foundation and joined by business angels Susana de Sousa and Ellie Asgari.
Lampsy Health, a technology developed for home use, features a device that integrates sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms into a lamp. This innovative solution can automatically detect epileptic seizures and send real-time alerts to caregivers or emergency contacts. The device is currently undergoing clinical validation in collaboration with several public hospitals in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
“Epilepsy causes seizures that can be fatal, but 86% of nocturnal seizures go unnoticed. This leads to significant fear and anxiety for patients and their families. This device could restore peace of mind and provide the security they need”, says Vicente Garção, co-founder of Lampsy Health, a former Biomedical Engineering student who is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Técnico.
The amount now invested will allow the company to strengthen strategic partnerships and prepare to enter the European market. ‘This investment is critical if we are to get closer to our goal of guaranteeing safety and peace of mind for all families living with epilepsy worldwide’, he emphasises.
According to Vicente Garção, ‘at a clinical level, the main challenges have been related to the joint development of hardware and software that achieves high precision while keeping production costs low’. He adds that Lampsy is undergoing ‘class I medical device certification in the European Union, which requires a rigorous process of documentation and clinical validation’. ‘The clinical validation we want to achieve, with hundreds of patients, is challenging,’ he describes.
The project, founded by Técnico alumni Vicente Garção, Leonor Pereira, and Joana Pinto, received the 2nd Inova+ 2024 award in the ‘Scientific Innovation’ category and was a finalist in last year’s Lab2Market programme. With this new funding, the team aims to finalise product development, secure medical device certification in the European Union, and begin entering the European market in early 2026.
Later this year, Lampsy Health plans to launch a new round of investment worth one million euros, with a view to consolidating its growth plan and expanding internationally.
