Keel is a browser extension and an app designed to make better use of waiting time while AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini generate responses. The project was developed by Mateus Bonifácio, an undergraduate student of Industrial Engineering and Management at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa.

The name of the app refers to the part of a boat responsible for providing ‘stability and direction’. With the slogan ‘Before you drift’, the app aims to “help people stay on course before they lose focus”.

The student, who was diagnosed with dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), explains that the idea arose from his own experience. “Over time, I realised that I often lost focus while waiting for answers rather than while studying with AI”.

During this waiting period, the app offers various features, such as quick cognitive games, a space for notes and task management (with the option to synchronise with Google Calendar), customisable quizzes, and a guided breathing mode to help users refocus their attention. As soon as the AI tool generates an answer, Keel’s interface disappears automatically.

According to Mateus Bonifácio, the main challenge is reaching new users. “We’re currently in the holiday season, and it’s not only harder to attract users to the project but also to participate in startup competitions”, he explains.

Although the project is still in its early stages, the student says that the feedback has been “very positive”. Beatriz Nunes, a Design student, has also joined the team and is contributing to creativity and communication.

Keel is already available for Chrome and Safari and can be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store and the App Store.
