Técnico welcomed new students’ families in three welcome sessions

The initiative brought families closer to academic life on campus.

The atmosphere in one of the large auditoriums at Alameda campus (completely full) reflected a mix of expectation and curiosity. Amid hushed conversations and attentive glances, many felt anxiety, but also confidence in their children’s academic future. “It’s important to support them at this stage of their academic journey. It’s good for their growth and for acquiring tools for adult life. We must ensure they do not become discouraged. We’ll be here to support them, just as we have until now”, says Alice Pinhala, mother of a student who has just joined Técnico to pursue an Integrated Master’s Programme in Architecture.

Over three days, always at 10 a.m., the ‘Family Welcome Sessions’ brought together parents and other family members for the second consecutive year. They were invited to learn more about the support services, academic life and facilities at Alameda campus.

Sofia Rodrigues, mother of a new student in Mechanical Engineering, commented that the session was an opportunity to set expectations: “I hope he leaves well prepared to pursue what he enjoys most in life, without limits on his choices”. She also emphasised the importance of the academic experience as a time of discovery, encouraging students to “make the most of it and reinvent themselves”.

After the session, family members were taken on a guided tour of the campus. As they passed through study rooms, corridors, and social areas, they gained insight into the daily life of students. “It was interesting to see where he will study and socialise. It gives us more security and understanding of what our children will face”, said Esequiela Abreu, mother of a new student who joined Técnico to pursue an Integrated Master’s Programme in Architecture.

Additionally, Técnico has a tradition of the “godparents’ blessing,” which was the case of Flávio Dinis, an undergraduate student in Computer Science and Engineering. He was accompanied on his first day by his godfather, a Técnico alumnus who graduated in Materials Engineering. “I felt I could answer questions and share my experiences at Técnico. It’s a way of supporting those who are just starting this journey”, he said, highlighting the experience of returning to the School through the eyes of newcomers.

The start of the academic year at Técnico was not only a time to welcome new students, but also their support networks, allowing families to learn about available resources, gain insight into everyday academic life, and strengthen their connection with the School. The welcome sessions concluded with a hopeful message: “See you on Graduation Day”.
