The new students admitted at Instituto Superior Técnico in the second call of the National Competition for Access to Public Higher Education (CNAES) were welcomed on 16 and 17 September at Alameda and Oeiras campi.
On their first day at the School, over 115 new students experienced a mix of excitement and awareness about the journey ahead. There were welcome kits, meetings with mentors, and campus tours to mark the occasion.
On 16 September, at Oeiras campus, Mariana Rosa, a Computer Science and Engineering student, set the tone: “Técnico was my first choice. I’m excited, but I prefer not to get my hopes up. The future? I’m going to find out now”.
Afonso Vigário, who got accepted in Electronics Engineering, explains why he chose Técnico: “People speak very highly of Técnico, and also because my cousin studied here”. “This academic year, I hope to keep up with the classes and maybe join the Electronics Engineering students’ organisation”, he adds.
Alexia Silva is about to start the Undergraduate Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management and highlights the influence of her family and her adaptation to the new academic rhythm: “I chose Técnico because of its reputation and also because my father studied here. It was my first choice and I hope to learn a lot”.
Several groups of mentors and new students walk through the corridors and spaces at Alameda campus. Lara Pereira is one of the mentors who knows Técnico well. She is a 3-year Mechanical Engineering student and is repeating her mentoring duties. “Talking to new students rekindles the enthusiasm that is sometimes lost. It’s captivating”, she shares. She particularly enjoys this first interaction between mentors and new students because “afterwards, they become a group of friends, and the difference is no longer noticeable”.
Tiago Pinto chose the Undergraduate Programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering as his first option. He is considering specializing in robotics for his master’s degree but he is waiting to see if he can reconcile study with his hobbies, such as sports, music, and reading, along with participating in some MOOCs. He is also contemplating joining a students’ organisation related to sports.
Rita Figueiredo is undecided between choosing Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, as both programmes would allow her to pursue her dream master’s programme in neuroscience. Ultimately, she opted for Electrical and Computer Engineering. Although she acknowledges that Técnico is “demanding”, she hopes to “enjoy her experience”. Rita is particularly excited about the wide range of “extracurricular activities, workshops, and internships” available, all of which she plans to participate in.
