The student hall has 335 new beds divided into 240 single and double rooms. The first building of the new student hall complex of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is located in Cidade Universitária and was inaugurated on 24th November. It is the first part of a larger project that includes three buildings with a capacity for 901 students. The complex will also have a central square with commercial spaces and an underground car park.
The new student hall honours the work of the former Rector of ULisboa and former President of Técnico, António Cruz Serra, particularly regarding the support of disadvantaged students.
The new student hall has various common areas such as lounges, study rooms and leisure spaces equipped with televisions and small sports equipment.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, the Rector of Universidade de Lisboa, Luís Ferreira and the President of Instituto Superior Técnico, Rogério Colaço.
The new hall received funding under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which covered many of the costs.
ULisboa had a total of 1145 beds spread across its 13 student halls. With this project, it has significantly increased its accommodation capacity to 1480 beds for students, and it is expected to reach 2046 beds with the completion of the student hall complex.
