On October 1st, the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal) opened its annual call for up to 10 full doctoral scholarships.
These scholarships are for students who wish to spend two years in Pittsburgh, United States, and three in Portugal. Upon completion of their doctorate, candidates will receive two diplomas: one from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and another from the partner university in Portugal.
The ten scholarships fall within the areas of Information and Communication Technologies, the main field of activity of the CMU Portugal program, and are funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
In Portugal, the program involves the participation of several institutions, including the Universities of Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon, Minho, Porto, Universidade Católica and Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
The eleven doctoral programs accepting applications for the 2026/2027 academic year are: Machine Learning, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Engineering and Public Policy, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Neuroscience, Neural Computing, Robotics, Societal Computing, and Language Technologies.
The application deadlines for the 2026/2027 academic year vary according to the research areas being considered:
- December 1: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neural Computing
- December 10: Machine Learning, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Robotics, Societal Computing, and Language Technologies
- December 15: Engineering and Public Policy and Electrical and Computer Engineering
During the doctoral period, scholarships will cover full tuition fees at both CMU and Portugal, plus a monthly stipend.
The program lasts five years, with annual renewal. Three of these years are held in Portugal and two at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). All courses are taught entirely in English, both in the United States and in Portugal.
