Seven teams from the Técnico Students’ Union (AEIST) qualified for the National University Championships (CNUs), which will be held in Aveiro from 15th to 26th April. Three of them – women’s basketball (in the picture), men’s 11-a-side football and men’s volleyball – won first place in the Lisbon University Championship (CUL), which took place from 11th to 22nd March at Cidade Universitária.
These teams will also be joined in the national finals by the women’s futsal, women’s volleyball and men’s handball teams, all of which ranked 2nd in the CUL. The men’s basketball team will also be in Aveiro, after having won 3rd place.
“I’m very proud to say that I’m part of AEIST, we’re undoubtedly the biggest university sports team in Lisbon. The result is historic: seven teams qualifying for the final stages was something we didn’t expect”, says António Jarmela, director of AEIST’s Sports and Social Responsibility Office.
On March 26th, the teams that qualified presented themselves to the school at a ceremony to launch the final stages of the National University Championships, in the Main Building’s meeting room, at Alameda campus. The event was attended by Rogério Colaço, president of Instituto Superior Técnico, Pedro Monteiro, president of AEIST and Edgar Almeida, president of the Lisbon Higher Education Sports Association (ADESL).
