Nanotechnology as the main driver of society

The lecture was given by professor Lars Montelius, who talked about the several changes that occurred in the recent years caused by the technological revolution.

Another IST Distinguished Lecture took place this Thursday, June 29. The speaker’s experience as well as the relevance and scope of the topic drew the attention of students, professors and researchers. Lars Montelius, Director General of INL (International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory), spoke about the importance of nanotechnology nowadays.

“We are facing a completely different world from that 20 years ago” said the Director of INL. The professor described a society increasingly connected where services are regularly personalised, “fully immersed by technology and its evolution”, thus completely dependent on nanotechnology. “Without nanotechnology we didn’t use Facebook, Google or Spotify as we do, and it would be strange”, he said.

A growing technological revolution that, according to the speaker, will led us to an overall interconnection, with multifunctional devices as a consequence of the increased integration of intelligent functions. “Nanotechnology is everywhere”, pointed out the professor.

According to professor Lars Montelius, INL is “a wonderful place where 200 people from 28 countries work passionately”, a “unique” institute that works in the field of nanotechnology with all international community. “Integrating knowledge” and “working together to accelerate innovation” are the main goals of this institution based in Braga.
