Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Técnico achieves first place at European level in Shanghai ranking

After a few years in Europe's top 3 in this engineering field, the School has reached the top spot in the 2023 edition.

Instituto Superior Técnico has achieved 1st place in Europe and 4th place in the world in the Shanghai ranking, in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, as part of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa). In recent years, ULisboa has been in second and third place at European level in this scientific area. In addition to this result, ULisboa achieved its second best ranking in Civil Engineering, ranking 7th in Europe (36th worldwide).

Concerning other branches of engineering taught at Técnico, ULisboa is ranked between 151st and 200th in Mechanical Engineering and Water Resources. It also occupies a position in the 201-300 range in Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instruments Science & Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering and Chemical Engineering, with Biotechnology in the top 400 and Materials Engineering in the top 500.

In Natural Sciences, the university ranks 37th in the world for Oceanography, between 101st and 150th for Physics, in the top 200 for Earth Sciences and in the top 300 for Mathematics.

This ranking evaluates the performance of universities worldwide in 55 different scientific fields, which have published a minimum number of articles, varying according to the area of study, during the period 2018-2022. The data is obtained from the Web of Science and InCites platforms.

The scoring of institutions’ performance includes, among other things, the research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.
