The event “IET A F Harvey Prize – 2018 Winner Lecture & Sir John O’Reilly” took place this Wednesday, 4th June, at Técnico – Alameda campus (salão nobre).
The president of Técnico, professor Arlindo Oliveira, highlighted “this is a prestigious prize for Mário, for Técnico and for Portugal”. “Técnico has made an effort to hire the best faculty and researchers. Attracting the best was a strategy that we have adopted in recent years and I think we have managed it quite well”, said professor Arlindo Oliveira. “We are here to honour professor Mário G. Silveirinha and to learn more about his work”, he added.
Professor Mário G. Silveirinha took the opportunity to thank his research group at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) and then gave a lecture titled “Breaking the time-reversal symmetry with motion”. “The physical laws of mechanics and electromagnetism are time reversible”, said the IT researcher, who also demonstrated new solutions that allow unidirectional light propagation.
According to professor John O’Reilly, president of the IET A F Harvey Prize Committee, this is a very comprehensive prize that “stimulates research work” and rewards researchers from different countries and research areas. Professor John O’Reilly highlighted that the research carried out in Portugal “is at the highest international standards”.
