Shanghai ranking shows national leadership of Universidade de Lisboa in engineering fields where Técnico makes significant contributions

Marine/Ocean engineering ranks second in Europe and fourth globally. ULisboa has a leading position at national level in areas of expertise where Técnico makes an exclusive contribution, such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), also known as the ‘Shanghai ranking’ was published on 11 November. Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is once again in the national spotlight. ULisboa won the country’s top position in areas of expertise that are exclusive to Instituto Superior Técnico, such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering and ranked 4th in naval engineering globally and 2nd in Europe. Also at this level, civil engineering was placed 9th and mechanical engineering 12th.

The results also emphasise ULisboa’s national leadership in computer science and physics, with a significant contribution from Técnico, with ULisboa being included in 15 of the 23 engineering fields evaluated in this ranking.

In this edition, the scientific production of institutions between 2019 and 2023 were ranked based on bibliometric data collected from the Web of Science database. Methodological changes have been made to indicators and weights. The fields centred on:

  • World Class Faculty, which takes into account awards and excellent performance of faculty and researchers;
  • High Quality Research, which considers the volume of publications in Q1 journals (top 25%);
  • Research Impact, measured by the normalised citation impact;
  • World Class Output, which considers papers published in top journals and international academic awards;
  • International Collaboration, which highlights the volume of scientific publications with international partnerships.

The impact of the work carried out at Técnico has been evident in ULisboa’s results over the years in this ranking, as seen in past editions (2023 and 2021, for example).
