With over 40 years of research experience in membrane processes and teaching at Instituto Superior Técnico, Maria Norberta de Pinho will be honoured with a special issue of Separation and Purification Technology, a scientific journal dedicated to the dissemination of novel methods for separation and purification in Chemical and Environmental Engineering.
Today, membranes are produced using a wide variety of polymers, and structures are also manufactured for use in ultrafiltration and multiple separation and purification processes. These are common practices in the treatment of water for human consumption and wastewater, as well as in production processes in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries and medicine, with haemodialysis and blood oxygenation.
According to Separation and Purification Technology, “Maria Norberta de Pinho has been working and collaborating with the precursors in this field” since the 1970s, also participating “in the main conferences in membrane science and technology” as a speaker on numerous occasions. The special edition aims to “honour the retired Técnico full professor for her contributions in the area of membrane separation processes, bringing together publications with new and relevant results in the current advancement of membrane systems as separation and purification technologies”.
“Throughout my Chemical Engineering teaching career at Técnico, I have had the privilege of teaching several generations of students of exceptional academic calibre”, says Maria Norberta de Pinho, adding that these students “have developed a remarkable career path both in industry and in academia”. She highlights important positions she has held during his academic journey, namely visiting researcher at organisations such as the Max-Planck Institut für Biophysik (Frankfurt, Germany), the National Research Council of Canada (Ottawa, Canada) and the Verfahrenstechnik Institute (Aachen, Germany).
The deadline for submitting articles for this special issue – ‘Special Issue – Membrane Separation Processes. A Tribute to Professor Maria Norberta de Pinho’ – is January 15th, 2025.
